Have alternative lifts on deck.  If you go in planning to flat bench but a nagging elbow just won't quiet down, don't feel bad about dropping the flat bench in favor of a lift that puts less stress on the painful joint. 

Ohh yeh I'm hearing that......

Nothing wrong with machines for the 40+ bodybuilder.

I congratulate the 40+ guys who are still ATG squatting and benching heavy, but I can't do this anymore. And for bodybuilding purposes, I don't need it.

In fact, after having nerve damage that atrophied the outer head of my left triceps and my left inner pec, I calmed down on training the upper body. I focused more on my lower body (which I had always trained too much for power) and guess what happened: after age 40 I reached my highest thigh and calve circumference ever, only using machines and high reps. I don't have half the power anymore that I had at age 25, but my legs look better (except for my old knees :-/).
